Presentation Tools in Libraries

The way one can present information with ease using a variety of different mediums is astounding. We are not just limited to one piece of software, but have an array of choices. You can use Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint, Google applications like Google Slides and Google Sites, Prezi, and much more. Visit http://guides.library.harvard.edu/Presentations for an excellent guide to learning different presentation tools you can implement in your library.

Why is important for libraries to utilize presentation tools?

In my Library Media and Technology course, we have been learning to use various software applications including Microsoft PowerPoint and Publisher as well as Google Sites and Google Slides. All of these projects were created in order to provide information about a library service to potential users. Older patrons visiting a library’s website may not know how to do certain tasks. Perhaps they want to check out a particular book, but they do not know how to search for it in the library’s catalog. Or maybe they want to place a hold on an item and have it sent to their local branch. Creating these guides like the one shown below and uploading it to the library’s website will allow those patrons to learn how to navigate the website, without having to walk into the library and ask a staff member for help every time.

  1. I like your point about older users being able to use these tools to learn how to do things at the library that are new to them.
