Libraries and Virtual Reality

When I first heard about Libraries offering a virtual reality experience to its users, I thought it was just some way to try and attract more people and bring them into the library. While this is partially correct, I soon found out with a little research that virtual reality can be used to provide a whole new exciting and rich learning experience to those using this technology.

Technological advancements are challenging educators to provide new ways of teaching and learning apart from traditional textbook reading and lectures; virtual reality helps achieve this goal by bringing the contents in a textbook into an interactive hands-on experience. See how the University of Oklahoma Libraries provide their students with a virtual reality experience, allowing them to have a better understanding of concepts learned in their classrooms.

Entering into the world of virtual reality is practically limitless. Heather Moorefield-Lang, an assistant professor in the School of Library and Information Science at the University of South Carolina notes how virtual reality allows you to experience what it is like to be a surgeon or cook, or by going on a space exploration adventure. While virtual reality cannot replace real life experiences, it does broaden the possibilities of exploration and innovation to the technological world we now live in.
